10 Tips to Update Your Personal Style After a Major Life Change

Life is a constant journey of change and evolution, and so is our personal style. Whether you've recently experienced a major life change (childbirth, new career, weight gain/loss) or you simply want to refresh your look for a new season, transitioning your personal style can be an exciting and transformative process. It's an opportunity to express who you are NOW, both internally and externally. I've learned the best thing to do is live in the now. You can't change the past, and you don't know what the future holds so look cute today!

1. Take time for self-reflection.

The first step in transitioning your personal style is to understand yourself better. What do you value, how do you want to be perceived, and what makes you feel comfortable? Reflect on your lifestyle, personality, and preferences. This self-awareness will serve as a foundation for your style transformation.

2. De-clutter your closet and re-evaluate.

Before you start adding new pieces to your wardrobe, take some time to declutter. Get rid of those too small dresses and pants, and the pieces you have been holding on to that you know you aren't going to wear. They will sit there for years just taking up space. Go through your clothes and accessories, and donate items to a woman who can use and appreciate them. This will make room for new pieces that truly represent the new you.

3. Define your style aesthetic.

Based on your self-reflection and current lifestyle and preferences, define your style aesthetic. Are you drawn to classic, bohemian, minimalist, or eclectic looks? Clarifying your aesthetic will make shopping for new pieces and putting outfits together much easier.

4. Search for personal style inspiration.

Look for inspiration from various sources such as Pinterest, Instagram, TikTok, fashion magazines, or even people you admire. Create a mood board or Pinterest board to gather images that resonate with your desired style direction. This will help you visualize your goals and stay on track during your style transition

5. Start with basics.

Invest in high-quality, versatile basics that can be mixed and matched effortlessly. These foundational pieces serve as the building blocks of your wardrobe and can be adapted to suit different seasons and occasions.

Examples of basics include white t-shirts, black pants, denim jeans, a black dress, a blazer, a white button up shirt, cardigans, a basic trench coat, reliable flats, classic sneakers, ankle boots, black pumps, a versatile black handbag, camisoles and tank tops, leggings, shapewear and a good bra.

The basics you choose should reflect your style aesthetic, and some of these items are adjustable based on your lifestyle.

6. Experiment with color.

Introduce new colors into your wardrobe to reflect your evolving style. Consider colors that complement your skin tone and make you feel confident. Play with different color combinations to add depth and personality to your outfits.

7. Accessorize wisely.

Accessories can make or break an outfit. Experiment with scarves, hats, jewelry, and shoes to add flair to your style. These smaller pieces are an excellent way to incorporate trends without committing to an entire wardrobe overhaul.

8. Take fashion risks.

Don't be afraid to step out of your comfort zone and try new things. Whether it's a bold print, a statement piece, or a unique style you've never worn before, taking fashion risks can be liberating and help you discover new aspects of your personal style.

9. Invest in tailoring.

Properly fitting clothes can elevate any style. Invest in tailoring to ensure your clothes fit you like a glove. A well-fitted outfit can boost your confidence and make you feel put-together, no matter the occasion.

10. Evolve gradually.

Remember, personal style transitions are not overnight transformations. Be patient with yourself and enjoy the journey. As you continue to evolve, your style will naturally evolve with you. Embrace the process and have fun experimenting with different looks.

Transitioning your personal style after a major life change or for a new season is an opportunity for self-expression and growth. By following these ten tips and staying true to your evolving self, you can confidently step into the next chapter of your life with a style that reflects your authentic identity. Remember, your style is a powerful tool for self-expression, so embrace the change and enjoy the fashion adventure ahead!
